Youth members of Umuadara and Umulogho, located in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, have detained a suspect linked to the murder of Wendy Achumba, a nursing student at the College of Nursing, Obowo.
A community source reported that the operation was led by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa after a detailed investigation.
The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, admitted to the crime in a video interview that later went viral.
Okonkwo claimed that he and a companion named Emmanuel entered the student’s apartment at about 7 p.m., and both allegedly assaulted Achumba.
According to the source, the student was the sole occupant of the building, as her two neighbours had departed for nursing placements.
“She was the only one in the house. The owner of the house is based in America. There were three students occupying the house. But two went for their nursing experience, leaving only her in the compound,” the source said.
Okonkwo described how the student had rejected their sexual advances, prompting them to break into her residence.
He further stated that he struck the student with a stick before Emmanuel allegedly used a knife on her throat following repeated forced sexual acts.
“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. We went to her house around 7 p.m. I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once. After that, I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” Okonkwo said.
The suspect has reportedly been handed over to the police.
Police spokesman Henry Okoye had not yet responded to inquiries at the time of this report.
