Key talking points ahead of PSG v Arsenal Champions League final

Paris Saint‑Germain, the reigning Champions League holders, will face Arsenal in the final on Saturday at the Puskás Arena in Budapest, hoping to retain their title.

Arsenal, who have never won the competition, are optimistic after securing their first Premier League title in 22 years. Manager Mikel Arteta believes his side can topple the French champions.

Arsenal’s set‑piece threat

While Arteta’s team has struggled at times to create from open play, they have generated significant danger from dead‑ball situations. Physical players, especially centre‑back Gabriel Magalhães, create havoc at corners, putting PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov under pressure, a potential weak link.

Mileage check

Many of Arsenal’s likely starters have played over 3,000 minutes this season across all competitions, with Declan Rice, William Saliba, Gabriel, Martin Zubimendi and David Raya exceeding 4,000 minutes.

Arteta has maintained a core group of players, insisting that fatigue should not be used as an excuse. “That’s the context and that’s the scenario, and we have to embrace it and especially enjoy the opportunity,” the Spanish coach said last month during the title race.

In contrast, Luis Enrique has rotated and rested many first‑choice players in Ligue 1 as PSG claimed their 12th title in the last 14 years. Only Willian Pacho, Vitinha and Warren Zaire‑Emery have logged more than 3,000 minutes this season.

“Rest is also an integral part of preparation, especially when we’re playing matches like these,” said Luis Enrique before the final.

PSG also competed in the Club World Cup last summer, adding to the need for the Asturian coach to balance his squad’s playing time.

Clean sheet machine

Both sides’ statistics suggest the final could hinge on whether PSG’s “unstoppable force” can penetrate Arsenal’s “immovable object.” Arsenal have conceded only six goals in the tournament, remaining unbeaten, and goalkeeper David Raya has kept nine clean sheets, matching the all‑time record.

In front of him, Gabriel and William Saliba form a strong centre‑back partnership that will challenge Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, supported by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue.

PSG have scored 44 goals in the tournament, one short of Barcelona’s record of 45 set in the 1999‑2000 campaign.

A Luis Enrique surprise

PSG outgunned Bayern Munich with a 5‑4 victory in the first leg of the semi‑final, generating excitement for the second leg. However, the coach altered his approach, playing more conservatively in Munich to secure a 1‑1 draw and reach the final.

Always ready to surprise opponents, Luis Enrique said the Ligue 1 champions would adapt their game to face Arsenal. “We’ll have to adapt to play and defend in a different way compared to what we usually do if we want to get the better of them,” he added.

Goalkeeper Safonov repeatedly redirected shots off the pitch as a tactic to congest the area around Bayern’s winger Michael Olise.

“We have analysed everything they do in every phase,” said Arteta. “We’ve prepared the possible scenarios. We try to understand the purpose behind what they do and what they want to achieve.”
