Kebbi University confirms death of a 300‑level student in hostel attack

The Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has confirmed that a 300‑level Biochemistry student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, died after being attacked by suspected thieves at a private hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area, Kebbi State.

Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Ibrahim Magawata announced the news in a statement released on Thursday. He said Nuhu suffered severe machete wounds during the assault and later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital.

The statement added that Nuhu, a native of Niger State, was attacked by a group of suspected hoodlums at his off‑campus residence in Kalgo.

“It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300‑level student of the Department of Biochemistry,” the statement read.

Magawata said the university had reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

He noted that security patrols have been intensified in Kalgo and other off‑campus areas where students live, and that a meeting has been scheduled with owners of private hostels to strengthen security measures, including better lighting and the deployment of night guards.

The dean urged students to remain calm and vigilant, to avoid spreading unverified information, and to report suspicious activities to security agencies promptly. He also advised them to avoid late‑night movements and to travel in groups when possible.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students and expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

Nuhu was buried on Thursday after funeral prayers were held at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.
