The Katsina State Government has denied accusations that it financed Hajj pilgrimages for criminal elements, calling the claim false and misleading.
Dr Nasir Mu’azu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, issued a statement on Wednesday in Katsina in response to allegations made by Bashir Kurfi on a Trust TV programme.
Mu’azu said the allegation is baseless, unfounded and designed to mislead the public and undermine the government’s and security agencies’ efforts to tackle insecurity.
He noted that the claim comes at a time when security forces, supported by the state government, are achieving significant successes in the fight against banditry and related crimes.
The commissioner described the allegation as a politically motivated attempt to divert attention from the progress being made in addressing insecurity.
He expressed concern about the ongoing politicisation of security matters by individuals and groups pursuing personal and political interests.
Mu’azu alleged that some actors were unhappy with the government’s refusal to fund schemes that could divert public resources from development projects and programmes.
He challenged those behind the allegations to present credible, verifiable evidence to support their claims.
The commissioner warned that the government would pursue all lawful means to protect its reputation and hold accountable anyone found spreading false and defamatory information.
He urged residents and Nigerians to disregard the allegations and continue supporting security agencies and other stakeholders working to restore peace and stability in the state.
Mu’azu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting security operations and implementing measures to ensure the safety, well‑being, and prosperity of residents.
