Kasper Schmeichel Announces Retirement After Shoulder Injury

Former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel announced his retirement on Wednesday after a serious shoulder injury forced him to end his playing career.

The 39‑year‑old Dane, son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, sustained the injury during a Europa League match for Celtic against Stuttgart in February.

He underwent surgery the following month in an attempt to preserve his career, but the operation was unsuccessful.

“When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will end my career as a professional footballer,” Schmeichel said to Danish television channel TV2.

“It’s a decision that has been taken for me after consulting several specialists who told me that I shouldn’t expect to return to play at the highest level.”

“It’s not fun, it’s absolutely not the way I would have wanted to end my career, but on the other hand, everything comes to an end.”

Schmeichel enjoyed a distinguished career, earning 120 caps for Denmark – placing him fourth on the all‑time appearance list for Danish internationals, nine caps and two places below his father.

After progressing through Manchester City’s youth system, he spent the majority of his career at Leicester, where he was part of the squad that shocked the football world by winning the Premier League in 2016.

He later lifted the FA Cup with Leicester five years later, had a brief spell at French club Nice, and finished his career in Scotland, winning consecutive league titles with Celtic.

His father, Peter Schmeichel, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, helped Denmark win the 1992 European Championship, captained Manchester United to Champions League glory in 1999, and won five Premier League titles with the Red Devils.
