Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, says the state is ready for the creation of a state police system, describing it as an important step towards improving security and protecting lives and property.
The governor made the statement on Wednesday while inaugurating the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
His spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, disclosed this in a statement.
Yusuf said a state police force would work alongside the Nigeria Police Force, not replace it.
According to him, both security bodies would share the responsibility of protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He said the two policing systems should be seen as partners that would improve intelligence gathering, respond more quickly to security threats and boost public confidence in law enforcement.
The governor added that Kano has the institutions, manpower and political commitment needed to operate a state police system once the necessary constitutional and legal requirements are approved.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s support for all lawful efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system and create a safer environment for people to carry out their daily activities without fear.
He emphasised that “the two policing structures should be seen as partners working together to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid response to security threats, and enhance public confidence in law reinforcement.”
Speaking on the newly inaugurated Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking, Yusuf said it reflects his government’s determination to address the rising problem of drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking through stronger cooperation among security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
He urged members of the task force to carry out their duties with professionalism, dedication and integrity, stressing that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires sustained commitment, effective inter-agency cooperation and the active support of all stakeholders.
