Yesterday, officials of the Nigeria Police Force in Jigawa State emphasized that community policing and grassroots intelligence gathering are essential tools for combating crime and ensuring public safety throughout the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Haruna A. Yahaya, made the statement while delivering a paper titled “Community Policing and Community-Based Intelligence Gathering Initiatives” to attendees of Course 48 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College during their study tour of Jigawa.
The delegation was headed by Brig. Gen. B.O. Omopariola and coordinated by Navy Capt. B.A. Bassey.
During the session, Yahaya noted that modern policing cannot succeed without robust collaboration between security agencies and local communities, emphasizing that intelligence provided by residents has consistently aided the Command in preventing and detecting crimes statewide.
He added that the Command has achieved operational successes against armed robbery, motorcycle snatching, drug abuse, rape, culpable homicide, mob violence, and farmers‑herders conflicts, thanks to credible intelligence supplied by the public.
Yahaya said the Police Command has bolstered partnerships with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women groups, vigilantes, hunters, forest guards, and civilian joint task force groups to enhance intelligence gathering and proactive crime prevention.
The commissioner also observed that the community policing initiative aligns with the vision of Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who emphasizes intelligence‑led policing, stakeholder engagement, and public participation in security management.
Yahaya described intelligence as the cornerstone of effective policing and urged residents to keep providing timely, useful information that can prevent threats to peace and stability.
He also praised the college’s Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Alfred Olugbenga Shogbanmu, for fostering strategic military and security leadership through academic and field‑based engagements.
The commissioner said the study tour would further strengthen inter‑agency cooperation and facilitate experience sharing among security institutions nationwide.
The Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining community policing initiatives and deepening collaboration with relevant stakeholders to secure lasting peace and security in Jigawa State.
