James Milner, Premier League record holder, retires.

Former England midfielder James Milner has announced that he will retire from professional football at the age of 40, concluding a 24‑year career in the Premier League.

Milner’s career began at his boyhood club Leeds United, where he made his debut at 16 and became the league’s youngest scorer. He later played for several clubs, including a three‑season stint at Brighton & Hove Albion, and won three Premier League titles—two with Manchester City and one with Liverpool. He was also part of Liverpool’s 2019 UEFA Champions League triumph.

While playing for Brighton in a match against Brentford in February, Milner surpassed the previous record for the most Premier League appearances, finishing his career with 658 games.

“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” Milner said in a statement posted on Instagram.

“From making my debut for Leeds, a club I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have imagined the journey I’ve been on.”
