South Africa defender Ime Okon has reflected on Bafana Bafana’s disappointing defeat to Mexico, reports Completesports.com.
Hugo Broos’ side suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday night.
Julian Quinones gave Mexico the lead in the fifth minute of the thrilling contest.
Erik Lira won possession from Sphephelo Sithole before feeding Quiñones, who calmly slotted the ball through Ronwen Williams’ legs from just inside the penalty area.
Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s lead in the 67th minute, heading home a superb cross from Roberto Alvarado.
South Africa finished the game with nine-men after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane received the marching order.

Okon Reflects On Tough Defeat
Okon said the team must quickly put the disappointing defeat behind them and focus on the challenges ahead.
“It was a tough game, we had them at times. We just look forward, we’re positive. We know it’s a loss but we’re looking to the next game now,” Okon told SportyTV after the match.
“I know the team, I know myself. All of us just wanna fight for ourselves, our families, our country. Onto the next.”
Not A Perfect Debut For Bafana Bafana
Okon, who has a Nigerian father and a South African mother, marked his World Cup debut with a full 90-minute performance.
The centre-back said his first World Cup appearance was a disappointing experience he would rather put behind him.
“It’s not a World Cup debut I’ll want to remember. But we need to keep on fighting. We trust in each other, all of us work so hard to be here,” Okon added.
South Africa will face Czech Republic in their second Group A game at the Atlanta Stadium next week Thursday.
