ISWAP commanders, IEDs specialist surrender to troops in Yobe

The Nigerian Army announced that two commanders of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), including a suspected Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) specialist, have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Yobe.

This information was released in an operational report presented to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The report identified the two surrendering terrorists as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, who gave up to the 159 Battalion in Geidam on June 8.

Ismail Mohammed was described as one of the commanders under the leadership of Baa Shuwa and was said to possess detailed knowledge of the group’s activities.

Abu Umar was identified as an ISWAP engineer and specialist in vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, with alleged knowledge of locations where such devices were produced and stored within ISWAP camps.

Both suspects are currently in military custody for further investigation.

The report also noted that troops apprehended two suspected terrorist informants in separate operations in Borno.

On June 9, the combined forces of the 19 Battalion, 25 Brigade Garrison and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force arrested a suspected informant in Damboa town. The suspect was caught while purchasing farm items and mosquito nets that were allegedly intended for terrorists operating within Damboa Local Government Area. He confessed during a preliminary investigation to supplying logistics and providing information to terrorist elements and is now in the custody of Headquarters 25 Brigade for further investigation.

On the same day, troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion arrested another suspected terrorist informant around 7:00 p.m. He remains in military custody pending further action.

That day, troops also thwarted an attempted terrorist attack on a military location after spotting suspected terrorists approaching the area. Fire missions were launched to neutralise the attackers and deny them freedom of action within the operational zone.

On June 10, troops conducted an exploitation of the area and discovered the corpses of two terrorists and a motorcycle. Preliminary assessments indicated the bodies were already decomposing, suggesting the terrorists had been neutralised during an earlier encounter with troops in Buni Yadi. No additional items were recovered during the search. (NAN)
