Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei announced on Thursday that he had approved a United States agreement to end the Middle East conflict, even though he had initially held a different opinion. He did not provide further details.

“In principle, I had a different view about the memorandum of understanding, but I issued my permission because of the commitment that the honourable Iranian president, as chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, gave me on behalf of himself and other members to protect the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front,” Khamenei said in a message shown on state television.

Since taking office in March after the death of his father and predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the US‑Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which sparked the regional war, Khamenei has not appeared publicly.

The message was his first response to the Iran‑US agreement to end the conflict, which was signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Khamenei said Trump had “used all kinds of levers” to secure the deal “out of desperation.”

In his statement, he noted that he had received assurances from Pezeshkian that the agreement would not be accepted if the American side demanded excessive concessions.

“It is obvious that the face‑to‑face negotiations that will be held in the future will not mean accepting the enemy’s point of view,” he added.
