Iran reports no U.S. visas have been issued for the 2026 World Cup yet.

On Thursday, the head of Iran’s football federation announced that no visas had been issued for the national team’s participation in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, according to state media.

“Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, we will have a decisive meeting with FIFA. They must give us guarantees, because the visa issue has still not been resolved,” the state news agency IRNA quoted federation chief Mehdi Taj as saying.

“We have not received any account from the other side regarding who has been granted visas. No visas have been issued yet,” he added.

Taj said the players were slated to travel to Ankara, Turkey, for fingerprinting required for the visa process.

He added that while fingerprinting would normally take place in Ankara, arrangements were being made to conduct it in Antalya to avoid travel.

Iran has been engaged in conflict with the United States and Israel since February 28, although a fragile ceasefire has held since April 8.

Tehran and Washington have had no diplomatic relations since 1980, after the hostage crisis at the U.S. embassy that followed the Islamic Revolution that overthrew the U.S.-backed Shah.

On Wednesday, Iran held a send‑off ceremony for its national football team as it prepared for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co‑hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Iranian squad, nicknamed TeamMelli, will be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the tournament.

Iran will open its campaign on June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand, followed by matches against Belgium and Egypt in Group G.
