United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said he is confident China will take steps to limit material support for Iran amid the current conflict.
Asked on Bloomberg TV on Friday whether he expected President Xi to pressure Tehran to help the United States reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Greer said: “First and foremost, it is essential that China keeps the Strait of Hormuz open, free of tolls and military control. Our discussions made that clear, and we appreciate it.”
Greer added that China’s approach to Iran is pragmatic and that it does not seek to oppose the United States.
Both China and President Trump aim for regional stability, giving the United States confidence that China will reduce material support for Iran.
Greer also noted that although rare‑earth exports from China to the United States are increasing, Beijing remains slow in approving some shipments.
He told Bloomberg TV that China has hesitated to issue certain export licenses, requiring U.S. officials to intervene for affected companies.
Greer said he would rate China’s performance as satisfactory in this area.
He added that rare‑earth exports have improved, though the process can still be slow and sometimes requires the United States to assert its position.
