Insecurity Near Jos Escalates, Berom Youth Leader Warns as Slain Vigilantes Are Buried

Two vigilantes who were killed during a Wednesday attack on the Rantya community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State have been buried, raising concerns about rising insecurity in areas surrounding the state capital.

The burial, conducted amid grief and tension, drew family members, youths and local security volunteers who voiced their frustration over repeated attacks in parts of Jos South and called for stronger security measures.

At the funeral, Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), expressed alarm at what he described as the expanding reach of insecurity into communities within the Jos metropolitan area.

He said the attack, which reportedly took place around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, has increased fears among residents and raised new questions about the safety of communities near the city centre.

“Our hearts are deeply pained by what happened in Rantya. What is more troubling is that attacks are now taking place in communities close to the city centre. This should worry everyone and attract urgent intervention,” Mwantiri said.

He urged better collaboration and communication between security agencies and community leaders, arguing that stronger coordination would reduce tension and restore public confidence.

The BYM president also highlighted what he called delayed responses by security operatives and the lack of arrests despite repeated attacks across parts of the state.

Mwantiri identified Gero, Nyango and Rantya as communities increasingly vulnerable to attacks and called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and adopt more proactive measures to protect lives and property.

He further appealed to residents to remain united regardless of ethnic or religious differences and encouraged youths to support lawful community‑based security initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability in Plateau State.
