INEC Officials Absent During Surulere Constituency 11 APC Primaries

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were not present at the Surulere Constituency 11 House of Representatives primary election held on Saturday.

Quodir Onikeku, a former chairman of Coker-Aguda Local Government and former House of Representatives aspirant, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the absence of INEC staff was a source of disappointment.

He also expressed concern over the APC primary that was conducted across six centres within the constituency.

Surulere Constituency 11 is divided into six wards: Coker, Aguda, Orile, Itire, Ijesha, and Ikate.

“What happened in the six wards under Surulere Constituency 11 shows a lacuna in our party,” Onikeku said. “There was no accreditation. The officials supposed to conduct accreditation and voting were absent, and nothing of such took place here today.”

“For someone like us, we understand the game very well, and we also know that the party has mechanisms to arrange something like this. What we are doing today is to show that some of us still have integrity, and we believe that in no time, this country will move forward,” he added.

Onikeku further noted that residents of Surulere Constituency were not supporting Lanre Okunola, citing alleged neglect and a lack of constituency projects during Okunola’s two terms in the House of Representatives. He said Okunola visited the constituency only on Thursday, May 14, for a campaign and mobilisation ahead of a second‑term bid.

He expressed concern about the 2027 general elections and urged APC leaders to address the issues before the forthcoming national polls.

NAN reports that the APC primary in Surulere Constituency 11 was contested between Lanre Okunola and Aremu Olalekan Abdul‑lateef. Over 500 people reportedly turned out for the election, but no accreditation took place.

An APC official and party elder entered the selected premises within the wards and counted delegates randomly. The venues were surrounded by armed security personnel.
