INEC declares Faduyile winner as APC sweeps Ondo South Bye-Election

By Dayo Johnson Akure

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Prof. Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the Ondo South Senatorial District by‑election held on Saturday.

Faduyile, a former National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and current Special Adviser on Health Matters to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, secured a decisive victory.

INEC’s returning officer, Prof. Gbenga Solomon‑Ibileye, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, reported that Faduyile received 68,474 votes. Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) garnered 1,411 votes, while Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People’s Party (APP) and Clement Funso‑Nejo of the Boot Party (BP) received 213 and 70 votes respectively.

Solomon‑Ibileye made the announcement on Sunday at the collation centre in Okitipupa, within the Okitipupa council area of the state.

He added that the total votes cast were 70,770, with 602 rejected.

The election covered six local government areas: Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese‑Odo, Irele, Odigbo and Ile‑Oluji/Oke‑Igbo.

The by‑election was held to fill the vacancy left by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke said the by‑election served as a “testing ground” for the 2027 electoral cycle.

After the results were declared, Agboke noted that minor hiccups observed during the process would help the commission improve future operations. He also confirmed that all staff deployed to riverine areas returned safely and that no negative incidents were reported.
