The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that every one of the 22 registered political parties has submitted its membership register in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.

A statement issued on Friday, signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, noted that the parties submitted their registers after INEC granted an extension.

The extension was granted after parties voiced concerns in a Tuesday meeting about the timeline set out in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general election.

“The Commission is pleased to report that all registered parties submitted their registers by 8th May 2026, which is two days prior to the extended deadline,” the statement read.

It also clarified that following consultations with parties, INEC released a press statement on 27 March 2026, moving the deadline for register submission from 21 April 2026 to 10 May 2026.

The change was intended to align with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the primary dates chosen by the parties.

“Political parties were thus permitted to conduct their primaries within the approved timeframe from 23rd April 2026 to 30th May 2026, while the register of party members was required to be submitted to the Commission no later than 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries,” the statement added.

INEC confirmed that all parties complied with the extended deadline and that the submitted registers will be verified as required by law.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.
