Police in Gujarat’s Morbi district have detained both a labourer and his landlord after allegations that the landlord abused the worker’s wife and minor daughter over unpaid rent.
The couple had moved to Morbi about six months ago seeking better economic prospects and had rented an apartment for Rs 2,000 a month.
Investigators say the family later faced financial difficulties and struggled to keep up with the rent payments.
Authorities claim the landlord exploited the situation by demanding sexual favours from the wife in exchange for waiving the outstanding rent. The husband allegedly agreed to this arrangement, after which the landlord repeatedly assaulted the woman.
The investigation further uncovered that the abuse also extended to the couple’s underage daughter.
Local media reports state that the child was taken to various locations, including a property in Tankara, where she was abused by the landlord and another suspect.
The case came to light when the woman’s maternal grandfather learned of the situation and filed a complaint with the authorities.
Following the complaint, Morbi Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and began an investigation.
Both the labourer and the landlord were subsequently arrested. The labourer was remanded in prison custody, while the landlord was held in police custody for one day for further questioning.
Authorities also confirmed that a third suspect linked to the case remains at large, and efforts are underway to apprehend the individual, according to India Today.
