The Imo State Police Command has formally dissolved the Tiger Base Unit, a tactical squad previously operating under the command, and has introduced the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to enhance the state’s response to violent offenses.
Other tactical teams disbanded were the Scorpion Unit and the Lion Squad.
During a ceremony at the Command Headquarters in Owerri, State Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso announced that the new unit aligns with Inspector‑General of Police Olatunj Rilwalu Disu’s directive to bolster operational capacity and improve responses to violent crime throughout the federation.
Bosso explained that the creation of the VCRU was prompted by the dissolution of earlier units bearing animal names, such as the Anti‑Kidnapping Unit known as Tiger Base.
He further noted that the VCRU embodies the broader reforms underway in the Nigerian Police Force, which seek to enhance professionalism, accountability, and service quality.
Following an inspection of the new squad with other security heads and stakeholders, the Commissioner said that launching the unit underscores the Command’s dedication to reinforcing professional policing standards
