IGP visits NIPSS over deadly attack

Olatunji Disu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), visited the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, on Thursday following the recent gunmen attack on the institute.

Disu was accompanied by Isyaku Muhammed, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Training and Development, who also serves as the coordinating DIG for the North‑Central zone.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that on Tuesday morning gunmen killed two soldiers and a policeman at the institute.

During the visit, the IGP expressed his condolences to Prof. Ayo Omotayo, the Director General (DG) of NIPSS, and to the institute’s participants and staff. He also spoke with the families of the slain security personnel and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“I commiserate with you over the death of the three security personnel who lost their lives while safeguarding this great institute,” Disu said. “I want to assure you that the police is doing everything possible to secure this community so you can go about your lawful activities. The police and the military have done well so far in securing the environment and we will fortify security around the vicinity.”

The IGP announced plans to establish a police post within the institute to ensure proper surveillance and a rapid response to any future threats.

Omotayo thanked the IGP for his visit and praised the security agencies for their swift action in averting the situation. “We feel supported, relieved and loved by this visit,” he said. “From the night the attack occurred, every person that I called responded promptly. It is because of the prompt response that we were able to repel the attack.”

Omotayo revealed that the attackers had previously notified the institute of their intended arrival. “They told us that they were going to come, but we didn’t believe they would come. Even though we prepared for them. The police and military personnel didn’t run away and by the time they came, we were ready for them. It’s unfortunate we lost three security personnel during the attack,” he added.

He also noted that normalcy has since returned to the institute and all activities have fully resumed.
