The Inspector‑General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has issued a directive banning police personnel from engaging in unauthorised social media activities. He warned that such conduct erodes the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Nigeria Police Force.
The order follows growing concerns about officers creating and publishing videos, conducting live broadcasts, and otherwise using social media while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force without official approval.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, the IGP emphasised that although social media remains an important communication platform, its use by serving officers must adhere to existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He added that personnel are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while wearing a police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or leveraging their status for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.
To enforce compliance, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers have been instructed to immediately sensitize the personnel under their authority and ensure adherence to the directive.
The IGP further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate action against violations within their commands.
As part of enforcement, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X‑Squad) have been directed to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and safeguarding the institution’s integrity.
