IGC raises concerns over proposed ward delineation in Warri

The Itsekiri Grassroots Coalition (IGC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the National Assembly, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders to intervene in the dispute over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) proposed delineation of units, wards and constituencies in the Warri Federal Constituency.

The appeal comes after reports of rising tensions linked to the proposal. The IGC also cited claims that Itsekiri youths, organised under Ugbarajo Itsekiri Youths (UIY), who staged a peaceful protest on Monday, May 25, at INEC headquarters in Abuja, were allegedly attacked. These allegations have not been independently verified.

Responding to the situation, IGC National Coordinator Prince Collins Oritsetimeyin Edema said that no citizen should face intimidation, harassment or assault for expressing concerns in a democratic society.

Prince Edema added that he has reservations about the proposed ward delineation, arguing that it could affect the political representation and historical identity of the Itsekiri people in the Warri Federal Constituency. He warned that any process perceived as unfair or exclusionary could heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta.

The group called for the withdrawal of the current proposal and urged INEC to ensure that any delineation process is transparent, inclusive and reflective of all stakeholders’ interests. It also requested an impartial review of the circumstances surrounding the protest and the allegations that arose from it.

“The Itsekiri Nation will continue to pursue its concerns through lawful and democratic means, including civic engagement and advocacy,” the statement read.

“Our demand is centred on fairness, equity, and respect for our identity and political rights. A democratic society thrives when all voices are heard and considered.”

The group reaffirmed its commitment to unity and peaceful engagement in addressing issues affecting the Itsekiri people.
