…urges urgent preventive action against rising insecurity

By Adeola Badru

Amid growing insecurity concerns in Oyo State and 24 days after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area, Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has written to Governor Seyi Makinde, expressing readiness to provide security for public schools across the state.

Igboho, founder of Iru Ekun Private Security Limited, conveyed the proposal through a letter submitted to the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, with a copy sent to Governor Makinde.

The correspondence, dated June 9, 2026, and obtained by journalists in Ibadan, requested detailed data on the number and locations of public schools in the state as part of efforts to strengthen security around educational institutions.

According to the letter, the Iru Ekun Security Network said it is prepared to collaborate with the state government to protect pupils, teachers and school facilities from criminal attacks.

It proposed that at least two trained operatives be stationed at each public school, tasked with guarding school premises, monitoring access points, liaising with principals and community vigilantes, and preventing unlawful intrusion.

The letter also advised the government to improve physical security infrastructure around schools, including perimeter fencing to make monitoring and protection easier.

While commending ongoing rescue efforts by the state government and security agencies, the group stressed that preventive measures must be prioritised to curb recurring attacks on educational institutions.

It warned that delays in implementing such measures could expose pupils and teachers to avoidable risks, urging swift action to create what it described as a “protective shield” around schools across the state.

The organisation also expressed readiness to work with SUBEB, TESCOM, school management boards and community stakeholders to develop a comprehensive school security framework.
