World Igbo Congress plans Washington D.C. rally over insecurity in Nigeria

By Dennis Agbo

The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced that it will stage a large rally in Washington, D.C. to bring international attention to the growing insecurity in Nigeria, which has included killings and kidnappings in several communities.

In a statement released to Vanguard on Wednesday, the organization said it has tasked its Vice Chairman, Basil Onwukwe, with leading a delegation to the U.S. capital for the event.

The rally will be organized in partnership with the Save Nigeria advocacy group, headed by Stephen Osemweigie.

Organizers say the event aims to raise awareness of the security challenges facing Nigerian communities and to push for stronger responses to ongoing violence and criminal activity.

The program will feature discussions on insecurity and an awards ceremony honoring members of the U.S. Congress who have helped raise awareness of Nigeria’s security situation.

The rally is scheduled to run from June 20 to June 23, 2026, beginning each day at 10:00 a.m.

Speaking for the group, Onwukwe said the WIC remains committed to spotlighting insecurity issues and supporting efforts to improve safety in affected areas.

He also voiced concern about Nigeria’s security framework and called for a broader review of the country’s approach to combating violent crime.

Onwukwe urged members of the Nigerian diaspora to back advocacy efforts and to keep engaging international stakeholders on security matters.

The World Igbo Congress hopes that the Washington event will spur greater global attention and action to address insecurity in Nigeria.
