IFAB Introduces New Rules Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

The International Football Association Board, IFAB, has confirmed that several rule changes will be implemented during the 2026 World Cup.

Among the adjustments are expanded powers for VAR, a 10‑second substitution window, and stricter limits on tactical timeouts.

These modifications are intended to enhance match quality and reduce time‑wasting tactics.

Additional new regulations include:

Five‑second countdowns for throw‑ins and goal‑kicks.

Red cards for players who cover their mouths during confrontations.

Punishments for teams that walk off the pitch in protest.

Mandatory one‑minute off‑field treatment periods.
