The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Comrade Aladetan Abiodun, has declared that he remains the duly elected chairman of the council, dismissing reports suggesting his removal from office.
Aladetan stated that he was unaware of any valid National Executive Council (NEC) decision or lawful pronouncement removing him as chairman of the Lagos council of the union.
According to him, his emergence as chairman followed due process and complied fully with the constitution of the congress.
“I am still the bonafide, duly elected TUC Chairman in Lagos State,” he said.
Aladetan explained that he was elected on September 18, 2025, by accredited delegates from the 29 affiliate unions of the congress during an election held at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research in Yaba, Lagos.
He alleged that what was currently playing out was an unconstitutional attempt by the President of the TUC, Festus Osifo, and the Secretary-General, Nuhu Toro, to replace him with another individual who, according to him, did not contest for the office of chairman.
According to Aladetan, the individual in question had obtained nomination forms for the office of secretary and was elected into that position during the congress.
“The election that produced me was conducted in line with the delegate list and election guidelines issued by Comrade Nuhu Toro on behalf of the national body of the TUC,” he said.
The labour leader further disclosed that he had taken legal action over the matter at the National Industrial Court in Lagos.
“As a law-abiding trade unionist, I have abiding faith in constitutional order, due process and the rule of law rather than the rule of man,” he stated.
He said the matter was before the court in Suit No: NICN/LA/129/2026 between Comrade Aladetan Abiodun Vs Comrade (Engr.) Festus Osifo and four others.
“The matter is now properly before the court and I have absolute confidence in the integrity and independence of the judicial process,” he added.
Aladetan urged members of the public, affiliate unions, labour leaders and the media to disregard contrary claims regarding his position as chairman of the Lagos council.
He also reiterated his commitment to peace, internal democracy and due process within the congress.
“I remain committed to peace, due process of law and the cherished internal democracy bequeathed to us in the Trade Union Congress by great heroes past like Comrades Peter Esele, Quadri Olaleye, Bobboi Kaigama and others,” he said.
