I’m looking forward to marriage someday – Pretty Mike

By Ayo Onikoyi

Showman extraordinaire and owner of Proxy Lagos nightclub, Mike Nwogu—known to the public as Pretty Mike—has spoken openly about his views on marriage, family, and the challenges he faced after his club was shut down by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

During a recent visit to his venue, Pretty Mike welcomed a group of journalists and confirmed that he still hopes to settle down someday, describing marriage as a significant life milestone.

“Am I looking forward to marriage? Yes. I believe marriage is a major achievement. There’s nothing more beautiful than building a family and raising children together,” he said.

He added that the rising number of failed marriages has made many singles more cautious about tying the knot.

When asked about what he looks for in a partner, the socialite emphasized character and attitude over physical appearance.

“For me, it’s about behaviour, attitude and personality. Physical appearance is not enough to sustain a marriage,” he added.

Addressing his controversial public image, Pretty Mike admitted that controversy has become part of his brand, even though he does not actively seek scandal.

“My brand is already a controversial brand. It doesn’t necessarily mean I like controversy, but I found out that in this business, it is part of it,” he said.

Despite his flamboyant public persona, the Lagos entrepreneur described himself as a private person who prefers a quieter lifestyle.

“I actually hate parties and loud music. I like staying indoors by myself, but because nightlife is my business and source of income, I have to push myself out there,” he explained.

The nightclub owner also revealed that he spent more than N100 million renovating Proxy Lagos after the club was closed for several months following an NDEA raid.

He said the refurbishment was necessary to reposition the business and enhance the overall customer experience after the shutdown.

According to Pretty Mike, the venue remained closed for roughly nine months—a period that proved both financially and emotionally difficult for him and his team.

“I spent over N100 million renovating the club. After everything that happened, I felt there was a need to rebuild and create something even better for people who support my business,” he said.

He explained that, despite the prolonged closure, he was able to stay afloat through multiple income streams and support from family and business partners.

“The brand, Pretty Mike, is always making money. That is what has kept me afloat regardless,” he stated.

Beyond nightlife, Pretty Mike is involved in construction and real‑estate ventures, building and selling properties.

“I have a construction firm. I’m also slightly into real estate where I build and sell properties. Then, of course, there’s family support. People feel safe investing with me because they know I’m not the type to disappear,” he added.

He noted that the credibility he has earned over the years has encouraged many to invest in his projects and businesses.
