Cape Verde has opened a new chapter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but one notable Super Eagles achievement from 1998 remains untouched after the island nation reached the knockout stage, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Blue Sharks arrived at the tournament ranked 64th in the world and were not expected to progress from Group H. Before the competition started, many viewed them as outsiders against the more established Spain, Uruguay and even Saudi Arabia.
However, Cape Verde stunned all by becoming only the third-lowest ranked country to qualify for the knockout rounds since the FIFA ranking system was introduced in 1994, according to Opta. Their achievement places them behind only Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who were ranked 74th before the 1998 World Cup in France, and hosts Russia, who entered the 2018 tournament ranked 70th.

Cape Verde’s incredible World Cup story
Making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, Cape Verde faced difficult opponents in Group H. The nation of around 525,000 people was given only a small chance of reaching the knockout rounds.
The Blue Sharks refused to be intimidated. They opened their campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Spain before producing a dramatic 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Another disciplined performance earned them a 0-0 result against Saudi Arabia.
Those three draws gave Cape Verde three points, which proved enough to finish second in the group and qualify for the Round of 32.

They became only the third team in World Cup history to advance without winning a group-stage match. Even more impressively, they became the smallest country by population ever to reach the World Cup knockout rounds.
Their reward is a massive Round of 32 clash against defending world champions Argentina, a fixture that many are calling one of the biggest David-versus-Goliath matches of the tournament.
Why Super Eagles’ 1998 achievement still stands above the rest
While Cape Verde’s run deserves huge praise, it could not surpass what Nigeria achieved at the 1998 World Cup in France.
The Super Eagles entered that tournament ranked 74th in the FIFA rankings, ten places lower than Cape Verde’s position in 2026. Despite that ranking, Nigeria topped a difficult Group D that included Spain, Paraguay and Bulgaria.

Nigeria’s low ranking at the time was influenced by a two-year CAF suspension, but the squad still delivered one of the greatest World Cup group-stage performances by an African nation.
The Super Eagles also own another historic FIFA ranking record. In April 1994, after winning the Africa Cup of Nations and qualifying for their first World Cup, Nigeria climbed to fifth in the world. Led by coach Clemens Westerhof and stars such as Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi and Finidi George, that remains the highest FIFA ranking ever achieved by an African nation.
So while Cape Verde have written a new chapter in World Cup history, Nigeria’s famous record as the lowest-ranked nation to advance from the group stage remains firmly intact.
