House of Representatives Majority Leader Ihonvbere Loses Bid to Return to Office

Professor Julius Ihonvbere, the current Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, was not re‑elected to the Green Chamber after losing the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for the Owan Federal Constituency.

Kelvin Muhammed, the Returning Officer at the party’s Afuze office, announced the primary results. Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, a former Commissioner for Mining, won with 3,695 votes.

According to Muhammed, five candidates contested the election: Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, Hon. Abdul Oroh, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, Hon. Folly Ogidegbe, and Barrister Stewart.

The vote tallies were as follows: Hon. Andrew Ijegbai – 3,695 votes; Hon. Abdul Oroh – 1,740 votes; Professor Julius Ihonvbere – 1,005 votes; Hon. Folly Ogidegbe – 505 votes; Barrister Stewart – 642 votes. A total of 7,587 votes were cast, confirming Hon. Andrew Ijegbai as the primary winner.

In response, Ijegbai praised the party’s transparent process and pledged to represent the constituency effectively if elected in the general election.

In a separate contest, Hon. Eseosa Iyawe of the Oredo Federal Constituency also failed to secure re‑election, losing to Dr. Paddy Iyamu who received 7,088 votes.
