Amby Uneze in Owerri
On Wednesday evening, suspected Fulani bandits attacked the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) communities of Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, and Okolochi, kidnapping several people and injuring dozens.
Witnesses told journalists that the attackers shot people traveling along the Ihiagwa–Eziobodo FUTO road, abducted some, and left others with bullet wounds.
Many of the injured reported that the suspected Fulani herdsmen, estimated at more than 30, surrounded the road, fired at passersby, and seized those they could stop while carrying out the attack.
The fortunate survivors were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, while others were taken to nearby hospitals.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the attack and said it has increased security presence in the affected areas, assuring residents that the perpetrators will be apprehended.
State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye said that the state Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has assured Imo citizens of their safety and has ordered a manhunt for the criminals responsible for the incident.
