Gunmen killed a pregnant woman and a young man in a recent attack on the Dyan community of Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.
Community sources reported that the attackers entered the area around 10 p.m. on Friday, opened fire, and killed the victims, leaving residents in mourning.
The victims were identified as Mrs. Happiness Pam, 32, who was pregnant, and Daniel Luka, 24.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killings and described the attack as gruesome and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rwang Tengwong, the association expressed shock and sadness at the report, lamenting the ongoing insecurity affecting communities in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
“It is heartbreaking that a pregnant woman carrying the hope of a family and an innocent young man with a promising future became victims of yet another senseless act of violence.”
“These killings represent not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on the collective peace, security and humanity of our people,” the statement read.
BYM extended condolences to the families of the deceased, to the people of the Dyan community, Rim Village, and to the entire Riyom Local Government Area.
The group urged security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice, and called on both the federal government and the Plateau State government to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, the association raised fresh concerns about worsening insecurity after the reported abduction of two drivers on the Kassa axis of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
BYM said the victims were traveling along the road around 10 p.m. on Thursday when armed men intercepted them and took them away.
