Five youths were killed on Tuesday afternoon when gunmen stormed a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack reportedly took place at about 3 pm, hours after another incident was reported near the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru.
Gero Village lies roughly five kilometres from the NIPSS community.
A resident, Ritiji Dalyop, told our correspondent that the victims were engaged in mining activities when the attackers entered the site and opened fire.
According to Dalyop, all five victims were shot dead by the gunmen.
The killings were confirmed in a statement signed by Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders‑Association (BYM).
The association said the attack was part of a growing wave of security threats in the area and expressed concern for the safety of residents and strategic national institutions.
The statement also referenced an earlier attack near NIPSS, Kuru, which it claimed resulted in the deaths of three security personnel.
BYM called for urgent intervention by security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among affected communities.
It urged government authorities to strengthen security surveillance and ensure the protection of lives and property.
At the time of filing this report, attempts to contact the spokesman of the Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, had been unsuccessful.
