Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon urged unity and respect for all, regardless of religious or ethnic background, on Saturday.

The remarks were delivered during a public unveiling of three books celebrating General Abdulsalami Abubakar on the occasion of his 84th birthday. The event, titled “The Legacy of a Statesman @ 84,” was chaired by Gowon.

Gowon emphasized the importance of dignified work and the values of peace, democracy, and good governance. He called on young people to model themselves after General Abubakar’s patriotism, commitment to justice, and dedication to national unity.

The former Head of State said that his admiration for the celebrant was the reason he accepted the invitation to preside over the ceremony.

He described General Abubakar as a highly sought‑after and credible mediator.
