Yemi Adaramodu, chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, warned that state governors who misuse state police forces will face sanctions.
He made the statement on Wednesday during an interview with Arise Television, where he answered questions.
The comments were made in the context of the Senate’s passage of the controversial State Police Bill that same day.
Adaramodu said that governors who misuse state police will trigger federal intervention. If a governor is perceived to use state police for a partisan, religious or sectional agenda, federal police may intervene.
The law allows federal police to assume the roles and functions of a state police force if it is determined to be operating beyond its constitutional mandate.
He added that these provisions serve as safeguards to prevent the use of state police for personal or political interests.
Adaramodu also noted that state police will receive funding from both federal and state governments.
He emphasized that funding responsibility does not rest solely on the states.
He added that the federal government will provide additional funding to ensure state police are well‑equipped and adequately resourced to meet the expanding security responsibilities assigned to them.
