Governor Sanwo‑Olu praises LASU for becoming Nigeria’s most preferred university

Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu commended Lagos State University for becoming the most preferred university in Nigeria in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, noting that the result underscores the school’s growing academic standing and national significance.

Data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board show that LASU received 84,426 applications, putting it ahead of other major universities nationwide.

The University of Lagos recorded 78,240 applications, and Obafemi Awolowo University received 60,370.

University of Ibadan and University of Benin placed fourth and fifth, with 58,895 and 55,425 applications respectively.

Commenting on the outcome, Sanwo‑Olu said the ranking reflects increasing confidence among students and parents in LASU’s academic standards, facilities, and reforms.

“LASU’s improved performance is a direct result of our deliberate focus on fostering an academic environment that leads to prosperity,” the governor said.

He restated his administration’s goal of positioning the university among the world’s top ten, emphasizing that education investment remains central to the state’s long‑term development plan.
