Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, inaugurated a Task Force to ensure the smooth launch of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh.

The ceremony took place at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House in Makurdi.

Governor Alia described the university as a strategic investment in Benue’s future and a vital platform for empowering youth through education, innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

The 12‑member committee is led by Prof. Leonard Shirgba, with Dr. Johnson Echor, Registrar of UAST, serving as secretary.

He said the university was conceived to become a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology, and enterprise development, equipping students with practical skills and entrepreneurial capacity to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Alia noted that establishing the institution aligns with his administration’s vision of building a knowledge‑driven economy that harnesses technology and turns ideas into sustainable development opportunities.

He emphasized that the university would strengthen Benue’s status as the nation’s food basket through cutting‑edge research, agricultural innovation, value addition, and the promotion of modern farming practices.

The governor tasked the newly formed Task Force with providing strategic direction for the institution’s successful establishment, stressing the need to put in place the necessary structures, policies, systems, and resources.

"The University is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and in the dreams of our young people," he said. "We are building a solution‑driven institution that will produce graduates who will create jobs, establish businesses, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy."

Governor Alia expressed confidence in the competence and integrity of the Task Force members, urging them to approach the assignment with dedication, professionalism, and patriotism.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, Alia expressed optimism that the university would become a reference point for academic excellence, cutting‑edge research, entrepreneurship, and solution‑oriented learning in Nigeria and across Africa.

The governor wished the Task Force members wisdom, success, and divine guidance in carrying out their responsibilities.
