Kaduna — The Kaduna State Government has carried out Governor Uba Sani’s promise to give financial assistance to 97 inmates who were granted clemency on Democracy Day, giving each N100,000 to aid their reintegration into society.
The beneficiaries, released under the governor’s constitutional prerogative of mercy, received the money on Friday at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre.
During the ceremony, Assistant Controller Dalhat Ibrahim, Officer in Charge of the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre, said the initiative would enhance the rehabilitation and reintegration of the former inmates.
He added that the governor’s intervention went beyond securing their release, emphasizing that the financial aid would help the inmates rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.
“By paying the fines of the inmates and giving them financial assistance, this will encourage them to do what they are supposed to do. They are now set to be reintegrated into society,” he said.
Ibrahim urged the beneficiaries to use the money as seed capital for small businesses or other legitimate ventures and to remain law‑abiding citizens.
Alhaji Mohammed Suleiman, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Protocol, also spoke, saying the disbursement represented the final phase of implementing the clemency granted by Governor Sani on June 12.
He explained that he led a government delegation to the custodial centre to present N100,000 to each released inmate, fulfilling the governor’s commitment.
Suleiman further urged the beneficiaries to maintain good conduct and avoid activities that could result in a return to custody.
Chuks Solomon, a beneficiary from Ebonyi State, thanked the governor for giving them a second chance.
“We thank the governor for giving us this opportunity to regain our freedom. We also appreciate the financial support because some of us will use it as capital to start a business. We pray that God continues to bless him,” he said.
Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, who spoke in Hausa, described the event as one of the happiest moments of his life.
He prayed for God’s continued blessings on Governor Uba Sani, Kaduna State, and Nigeria, wishing the governor success in his efforts.
