Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule announced that he believes he has both a constitutional and democratic right to back any candidate he considers capable of continuing the state’s development trajectory.

During a statewide broadcast in Lafia on Friday, the governor also revealed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will adopt direct primaries to choose its candidates for the 2027 elections.

He said the decision was made by key party stakeholders and is intended to give every aspirant a fair chance in the contest.

Sule stated, “As Governor of Nasarawa State and leader of our great party in the state, I have exercised my constitutional and democratic right to support and endorse an aspirant whom I believe possesses the capacity, experience and vision to consolidate on the gains we have collectively made.”

He added that his endorsement would not exclude other aspirants from participating in the primary election.

“Importantly, this does not foreclose the opportunities that exist in direct primary elections, which our party’s critical stakeholders have opted for. Let me once more restate for the record that as a leader of the state, I will ensure a credible contest,” he said.

The governor called on APC members, supporters of other political parties, youths, and community leaders to remain peaceful as political activity for the 2027 elections gains momentum.

He warned politicians and their supporters against hate speech, intimidation, and the spread of false information.

“No ambition is greater than the peace, unity and progress of our dear State,” Sule said.

“At the end of the primaries and elections, we shall all remain a very big family bound by a common destiny and united by our love for Nasarawa State.”

The governor also urged security agencies to remain professional and neutral before, during, and after the elections.

He advised young people not to allow themselves to be used to foment violence.

Sule noted that consultations and political activities ahead of the 2027 elections had already commenced across different political blocs.
