Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed sorrow over the building collapse on Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt that resulted in multiple fatalities.
He posted a statement on his official Facebook page on Friday morning, noting that he had visited the site on Thursday and that the collapse was avoidable, calling the incident an unfortunate development.
“We are deeply touched by the loss of human lives, as such misfortune should not have occured in modern times when professional standards and safety measures are expected to guide construction activities.”
“However, I commiserate with the families of the deceased and sympathise with those injured. I believe that the government will keep doing its best to mitigate future occurrences,” he said.
The governor also noted that during his visit, he “ordered the immediate closure of the site pending proper investigations”.
Daily Post reports that, despite rescue efforts at the site, many people remain trapped in the debris.
The rescue operation, which began in the early hours of Thursday, continued until about 6 p.m. without any successful recoveries.
Rescue workers then paused operations for the remainder of the day, resuming on Friday.
