Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, praised the National Assembly for approving the State Police Bill, calling the move a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing effort to enhance security.

In a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor explained that the bill, which would create state police forces to work alongside the Nigeria Police Force, is a bold step toward tackling the country’s security challenges.

Governor Alia said he has long supported the establishment of state police, arguing that decentralizing policing would strengthen the national security framework and offer better protection for citizens and their property.

He noted that the House of Representatives had already passed the bill, and the Senate’s recent endorsement shows federal lawmakers’ commitment to addressing Nigeria’s persistent insecurity.

The governor added that state police would be better positioned to collaborate with local communities, enabling quicker responses to threats through a deeper understanding of local cultures, terrain, and social dynamics.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership and dedication to reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s security architecture, a topic that has dominated national discourse for years.

Alia assured Benue residents that his administration will continue to prioritize security investments and support initiatives that promote peace, safety, and sustainable development across the state and the country.
