Governor Hyacinth Alia inaugurated a 12‑member Task Force tasked with overseeing the launch of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh (UAST). He described the new institution as a significant investment in Benue State’s future.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House in Makurdi, as reported by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula.

Prof. Leonard Shirgba will chair the committee, while Dr. Johnson Echor, the Registrar of UAST, will serve as secretary.

Addressing the Task Force, Governor Alia explained that UAST is intended to become a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology, and entrepreneurship. He emphasized the goal of equipping young people with practical skills and innovative capacities essential for economic progress.

He noted that the university aligns with his administration’s objective of building a knowledge‑based economy that harnesses technology, innovation, and research to generate sustainable development opportunities.

The governor added that the institution will strengthen Benue’s position as Nigeria’s food basket by promoting research‑driven agricultural practices, value addition, and modern farming techniques.

Alia tasked the committee with laying the groundwork for a successful launch, ensuring that critical infrastructure, policies, systems, and resources are established.

“The University is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and in the aspirations of our young people,” he said. “We are building a solution‑driven institution that will produce graduates who will create jobs, establish businesses, and contribute meaningfully to our economy.”

He expressed confidence in the expertise and integrity of the Task Force members and urged them to perform their duties with commitment, professionalism, and patriotism.

Governor Alia also expressed optimism that the university would become a leading hub for academic excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and impactful research both within Nigeria and internationally.

He wished the committee members success, wisdom, and divine guidance as they begin work on establishing the institution.
