Esther Nworgu delivered a sensational performance to win Team Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, setting a new Games record in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event, Completesports.com reports.
Nworgu produced a remarkable lift of 119.0kg to shatter the previous Games record, and secure the top spot on the podium.
It was a memorable outing for Nigeria as compatriot Esther Oyema claimed the silver medal with a successful lift of 115.5kg, completing a one-two finish for Team Nigeria.

England’s Olivia Broome settled for the bronze medal after lifting 106.6kg. Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki finished fourth, while England’s Charlotte McGuinness and India’s Suman Devi placed fifth and sixth respectively.
Earlier on Friday, Roland Ezuruike won Nigeria’s first medal of the Games, taking silver in the men’s para powerlifting lightweight event after an impressive display.
Team Nigeria has now opened its Glasgow 2026 campaign with three medals—one gold and two silver— on the first day of competition, underlining the country’s strength in para powerlifting.
