Android 17 is almost here, with Google expected to release the stable version in June 2026. After that, Samsung will begin rolling out One UI 9 to eligible Galaxy devices.
But many Samsung users will be left behind.
Several popular Galaxy phones, tablets, and foldables have officially reached the end of their Android upgrade cycle, meaning Android 16 and One UI 8 will be their final major software update.
Devices launched in 2022 or earlier are the most affected. That includes the Galaxy S22 lineup, Galaxy A53, Galaxy A73, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and multiple Galaxy M-series models widely used across Africa and other emerging markets.
Why these Samsung phones are losing Android support
The decision comes down to Samsung’s software update policy.
Every Galaxy device ships with a fixed number of Android OS upgrades and security updates. Once that upgrade limit is reached, the phone no longer receives new Android versions, though security patches may continue for a while longer.
Samsung currently operates across four major support tiers:
Because Android releases now arrive faster than before, some devices are exhausting their upgrade promises earlier than users expected.
For all the phones listed below, Android 16 (One UI 8) marks the end of the road.
Samsung phones that won’t get Android 17
Galaxy S series and Fan Edition phones
1. Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series launched in February 2022 running Android 12.
Samsung promised four Android upgrades for the lineup, which means Android 16 officially becomes its final major update. After receiving Android 13, 14, 15, and 16, the phones have exhausted their software support window.
The devices are still expected to receive One UI 8.5 and quarterly security patches through roughly 2027.
The situation has frustrated some users because Samsung introduced a much longer seven-year support policy only two years later with the Galaxy S24 lineup.
2. Galaxy S21 FE
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE also reaches the end of its upgrade cycle with Android 16.
The phone launched in early 2022 with Android 12 and qualifies for One UI 8.5, but Android 17 will not arrive on the device.
3. Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S21 family has already exited Samsung’s active update roadmap.
Their final major Android version was Android 14 with One UI 6.1.
4. Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra officially reached end-of-life support in 2025.
Their final operating system update was Android 13.
Foldables losing Android 17 support
1. Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 launched in 2022 with Android 12.
Because they fall under Samsung’s older four-year update policy, Android 16 becomes their last major Android release.
Samsung is still expected to deliver One UI 8.5 before shifting both devices to quarterly security updates.
2. Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 are already nearing the end of support.
Their final Android version is Android 15 with One UI 7.
Galaxy A-series phones missing Android 17
1. Galaxy A33, A53, and A73
The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, Samsung Galaxy A33 5G, and Samsung Galaxy A73 5G were among Samsung’s most popular mid-range phones in 2022.
All three launched with Android 12 and carried a four-generation update promise, meaning Android 16 is their final major upgrade.
2. Galaxy A24
Samsung Galaxy A24 launched in 2023 with Android 13.
Although newer than many phones on this list, it still caps out at Android 16 and will not receive Android 17.
3. Galaxy A23 5G
Samsung Galaxy A23 5G reached its final major OS version with Android 15.
It remains on quarterly security updates but is no longer eligible for future Android releases.
4. Galaxy A23 LTE and Galaxy A13
Samsung Galaxy A13 and the LTE version of the Galaxy A23 have completely exited Samsung’s routine update roadmap.
Both ended support with Android 14.
5. Galaxy A14 and A14 5G
The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G lineup launched with only a two-OS update promise.
Their final Android version is Android 15.
6. Galaxy A52, A52s, A72, and A32
Popular older mid-range devices like the Samsung Galaxy A52 and Samsung Galaxy A72 are now fully retired from major software support.
Their last Android version was Android 14.
Galaxy M and F series phones affected
Several Galaxy M and F series devices also miss out on Android 17.
Affected models include:
- Samsung Galaxy M33 5G
- Samsung Galaxy M34
- Samsung Galaxy M54
- Samsung Galaxy M14 5G
- Samsung Galaxy F54
- Samsung Galaxy F14
Most of these devices stop at either Android 15 or Android 16 depending on launch year and support tier.
Samsung tablets that won’t get Android 17
Samsung’s tablet lineup is also seeing several devices lose upgrade eligibility.
Affected models include:
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE
- Samsung Galaxy Tab A9
- Samsung Galaxy Tab A8
The Galaxy Tab S8 lineup ends with Android 16, while older Tab S7 devices stop at Android 14.
What One UI 8.5 means for older Samsung phones
For many of the devices above, One UI 8.5 will likely be the last meaningful feature update they ever receive.
The update is still based on Android 16 rather than Android 17, but it introduces several new features, including:
- Improved Quick Share file transfers
- AI-powered photo editing tools
- Better document scanning
- Auracast Bluetooth improvements
- Redesigned Quick Settings
- Expanded Bixby AI integration
However, these phones will miss Android 17-exclusive features such as advanced multitasking bubbles, system-wide App Lock, enhanced permissions management, and Android desktop mode.
After One UI 8.5, most affected Galaxy phones will move to quarterly security updates before eventually reaching complete end-of-life status.
