African football has produced several memorable stars at the FIFA World Cup, with many players leaving their mark through historic goals and standout performances on the global stage.

From Cameroon legend Roger Milla to Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan and Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa, a number of African footballers have written their names into World Cup history with crucial goals for their countries.

Here are Africa’s highest scorers in FIFA World Cup history:

Asamoah Gyan – 6 goals

The former Ghana captain is Africa’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with six goals in 11 matches. Gyan scored in three different tournaments — 2006, 2010 and 2014 — and played a key role in Ghana’s run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.

Roger Milla – 5 goals

Milla became one of Africa’s greatest World Cup icons after scoring four goals at Italia 1990. His performances helped Cameroon become the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Ahmed Musa – 4 goals

The Nigerian forward scored all four of his World Cup goals against Argentina and Iceland. Musa became the first Nigerian player to score in two different World Cup tournaments.

Papa Bouba Diop – 3 goals

The late Senegal midfielder is best remembered for scoring the winning goal against defending champions France at the 2002 World Cup. He finished the tournament with three goals.

Wahbi Khazri – 3 goals

Khazri scored three World Cup goals for Tunisia, including the winner against France during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Youssef En-Nesyri – 3 goals

The Morocco striker starred during the 2022 World Cup, scoring against Canada and Portugal as the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals for the first time in African history.

Samuel Eto’o – 3 goals

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, Eto’o scored three World Cup goals across four different tournaments for Cameroon.

Andre Ayew – 3 goals

Andre Ayew followed in the footsteps of his father Abedi Pele by becoming one of Ghana’s most important World Cup players, scoring three goals across the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
