A single fatality and three injuries were reported after a collision between a cement‑laden trailer and a fuel tanker on the Ugwu Onyeama stretch of the Enugu‑Onitsha Expressway.
The incident, which took place on Monday evening, raised concerns about a large fire due to the tanker’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo.
The Ugwu Onyeama segment of the expressway has long been identified as a major accident hotspot.
Early reports suggested three deaths, yet the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed only one fatality.
On Tuesday, FRSC Enugu State Sector Command’s Public Education Officer and Route Commander Theophilus Okoduwa confirmed that four adult males were involved, one of whom died and the other three sustained injuries of varying severity.
He added that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, and emergency crews acted quickly to prevent a potential explosion.
Okoduwa noted that the FRSC promptly notified both the Federal and Enugu State Fire Services, whose teams arrived swiftly.
The Enugu State Command of the Federal Fire Service reported that the initial distress call came at 3:28 a.m., prompting a high‑priority response.
