FRSC reports nine dead and 17 injured in Katsina highway crash.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State has confirmed that a fatal road accident on the Kankia‑Katsina Road resulted in nine deaths and 17 injuries. The incident involved a commercial bus and a trailer, affecting a total of 26 people.

Shamsudeen Babajo, the sector public education officer, issued a statement from Katsina. He said the crash occurred at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya around 8:03 p.m. on Saturday.

Babajo described the vehicles involved as a Toyota, a Hummer commercial bus, and a trailer. He reported that the FRSC’s Kankia Unit Command responded quickly after receiving a distress call, arriving at the scene within 23 minutes to begin rescue operations in cooperation with other emergency agencies.

Seventeen victims sustained injuries ranging from fractures and broken limbs to severe cuts. Nine passengers died as a result of the collision. Four of the deceased were burned beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle reportedly caught fire moments after the accident.

All injured individuals were transported immediately to General Hospital Kankia for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary. Babajo said the rescue team worked tirelessly to evacuate victims and clear the obstruction to restore traffic flow along the route.

He expressed sympathy for the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured. Preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash have begun, with findings expected to help prevent future incidents.

The command urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking, and reckless driving, especially during the busy festive travel period ahead of the Eid‑el‑Kabir celebrations. The FRSC also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are mechanically fit before embarking on long‑distance journeys and encouraged passengers to speak out against unsafe driving habits.
