…harps on one-term bid if…
By Chinedu Adonu
A former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has been selected as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Enugu State governorship race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the primary held by the state gubernatorial committee chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, Nnaji secured 7,424 votes, defeating Mr. Samson Nnamani, who received 600 votes.
During his acceptance speech, the former minister expressed gratitude to party members for entrusting him with the mandate and pledged to use it responsibly.
He vowed that his administration would alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Enugu by preventing excessive tax burdens, arguing that such measures would foster a sense of belonging among residents.
“I give this victory to the glory of God and to the people of Enugu, who have been oppressed in the last three years and overburdened with excessive and obnoxious taxes,” Nnaji said. “Landlords are paying through their nose, hoteliers are crying, commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) are almost out of existence, and even people carrying water on their heads are taxed. These are the people the government should be supporting financially.”
“That is the fulcrum of this struggle, the struggle to recover Enugu State, rebuild Enugu State and industrialise Enugu State so as to tackle youth restiveness,” he added. “We will build industries to create jobs for our people. Jim Nwobodo is the only governor in this state that built industries, and those industries are now being appropriated by the current administration. That will not continue in Enugu State.”
The former minister reiterated his commitment to improving the living conditions of the people of Enugu within four years and emphasized that he would serve only one term if elected governor.
Earlier, the chairman of the electoral committee, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, praised party faithful for their orderly conduct before, during, and after the primary election.
Nwachukwu said the outcome of the exercise demonstrated that the PDP remains strong and well positioned to win the 2027 Enugu State governorship election.
