An officer from the Nigerian Forestry and Security Services and a suspect he was pursuing both drowned in a well located within an unfinished building in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State.
Delta State Police Command spokesperson SP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday.
The statement was issued to clarify rumors that the police had killed the officer and the suspect.
The statement read, “The Delta State Police Command wishes to set the records straight on the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday, 14th May, 2026, along Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku road by Mega Chis.”
“A joint patrol team of police officers and personnel from the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service was on routine duty when they spotted two men later identified as Adama Augustine and another individual.”
“Upon seeing the patrol, the two men fled, prompting a chase by the Forest officers who were part of the team.”
“When they realized the officers were closing in, Adama Augustine leapt into an unfinished building.”
“One of the Forest officers continued the chase, but both Adama Augustine and the officer fell into an abandoned open well inside the unfinished building site and drowned.”
“They were rescued and taken to Ogwashi General Hospital, where the on‑duty doctor confirmed their deaths.”
“Their bodies are now at the hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.”
“This is a very painful and tragic accident. The Command expresses deep condolences to the family of Mr. Eze Ifeanyi, and his colleagues in the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service, the family of the late Adama Augustine. We mourn with all those affected by this calamity.”
“We want to make it very clear: No shooting took place. Nobody was killed by the police.”
An investigation has already begun. The Command reassures the residents of Ogwashi-Uku and Delta State of its commitment to their safety and urges everyone to remain calm and disregard rumours.
“We appeal for continued support and information from the public as we work to prevent such future occurrences.”
