Florentino Pérez has publicly affirmed that he will not step down as president of Real Madrid, rejectingwidespread speculation and urging the club to hold early elections to confirm his mandate.
After a season without any trophies, the 79‑year‑old president addressed the rumours of his exit by calling an emergency press conference, where he reiterated his dedication to the club and his plan to seek re‑election.
He accused parts of the Spanish press of launching a “smear campaign” and said he will again contest the upcoming elections to protect the club’s “socios” (member‑owner) system.

“I am not going to resign,” Pérez told the press conference as the season drew to a close with Real Madrid still trophyless.
“I have asked the board to start the procedure to call elections, and this board will present itself. Why am I calling an election? I have worked since 2000 for the club to be owned by the members. I have taken this decision because there has been an absurd campaign against Real Madrid and against me.
“We admit that the results have not been the best. Yet some use that as an excuse to attack me personally. ‘Where is Florentino?’ they ask. Some have even claimed I have a terminal cancer. I use this moment to inform those who are concerned that I remain president of Real Madrid and of another company with an annual turnover of 50 billion euros.
“My health is perfect. If I had cancer, as alleged, I would have to go to an oncology centre, wouldn’t I?”
