Five people have been confirmed dead after a building collapsed in the Durumi 3 area of Abuja, close to the well‑known Gudu Market.

The collapse happened at about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, leaving the neighbourhood in disarray as rescuers and residents worked to free trapped occupants.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for Health and Human Services in the Federal Capital Territory, confirmed the incident while representing the rescue agencies involved.

She reported that a total of 15 people were recovered from the rubble during the operation.

According to her, nine victims were rescued alive, five died, and one other victim was in critical condition.

Dr. Fasawe said that early findings from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) suggested that the developer may have used a substandard cement mixture in the construction of the building.

She urged residents and property developers in the capital to secure the necessary approvals from the FCT Development Control Department before starting any building project.

Rescue efforts and investigations into the cause of the collapse are continuing.
